Despite plenty of problems in his first season in the Arrows team, Bernoldi gets a chance to stake his reputation in Formula One again.
Arrows had sprung a major surprise on the eve of the 2001 season when they announced that a former test driver Bernoldi would be Jos Verstappen's partner in the team.
Arrows dispensed with the services of Pedro de la Rosa who was only a qualified success in 2000 and decamped to Jaguar.
The well-regarded Bernoldi began his career at the age of nine, racing karts.
After winning two Brazilian Karting Championships, he followed the path of many of his countrymen and travelled to Europe to race cars.
It was in Formula Renault in 1996 that Enrique started to attract attention as he won nine out of 11 races and was crowned European Formula Renault Champion.
He then moved on to compete in the British Formula Three Championship, the proving ground for many stars of Formula One stars including his compatriot Ayrton Senna.
In 1998, Enrique was runner-up in the Championship after winning no less than six races.
At that stage, he made the decision to move up to F3000 but combined that role with Formula One testing duties for Sauber.
Bernoldi was quickly into action, familiarising himself with the OrangeArrows car and the Asiatech engine through a series of rigorous testing sessions in Spain.
But on the track, it proved much harder to make progress,
He did manage a battling eighth place in an incident-packed race in Germany but otherwise failed to get close to the points.
With the familiarisation season behind him, the Brazilian will be hoping to be a more consistent performer this time.
